What is WorkFace Planning?![]() |
From the Construction Owners Association of Alberta (COAA): "The process of organizing and delivering all elements necessary, before work is started, to enable craft persons to perform quality work in a safe, effective and efficient manner." |

In Q1 2001 the Construction Owners Association of Alberta sponsored research to address lagging productivity on industrial projects with capital costs > $300 million. Identifying a best practice model for WorkFace Planning was one deliverable resulting from this research.
The WorkFace Planning Committee developed the model for WorkFace Planning over the next four years based upon the Lessons Learnt and best practices applied across the industry.
Today industry has embraced WorkFace Planning as the preferred method for reducing a project’s cost and schedule while substantially improving the quality and predictability.
WorkFace Planning is:
The creation of small, manageable, well defined, fully resourced, construction Field Installation work packages by people who understand the work.
The essential elements of WorkFace Planning are:
- WorkFace Planners: Trade and supervision experience, computer literacy and structured WorkFace Planner Training such as through SAIT WorkFace Planner Training.
- Plans: Field Installation Work Package (FIWP), 500 to 1000 man-hours each, with all constraints identified and systematically removed.
The complete application of WorkFace Planning provides a definitive view of:
- what we should be doing (the schedule).
- what we can do (information, equipment, resources and materials) and
- what we are doing (actuals/reality).
This logic is aligned with the Last Planner thesis authored by Glen Ballard PhD in 1994.
